Wonderful sunshine greeted 66 players signed in to compete for the 2017 Handicap Championships hosted by King’s Lynn Golf Club this year and what a great day of golf lay ahead.

The 1st round began in a light breeze with some excellent scores being returned. Ian Rafferty of Costessey Park led the field at the half-way mark with a brilliant nett 69, matched by Stephen Webster from Eaton and closely followed by three players on nett 70 and one further back on 71. The outlook for the 2nd round looked mouth-watering.  The course had been prepared in fantastic condition and it came through with flying colours.

One of the first players in was Ashley Johnson of King’s Lynn who had scored a two under par nett 70 in the morning and returned a four under par nett 68 in the afternoon giving him the clubhouse lead with a cumulative nett 138. Ashley waited around for the whole field to come in. Sam Chadwick came in with a fantastic nett 66 some six under par against handicap and when added to his morning round of nett 75 giving an aggregate of nett 141 and just failing to pip Ashley. Then Joe Robinson of Royal Norwich delivered a nett 68 and again when added to the morning round just missing out with yet another total of 141 nett. It was a tense affair, more and more cards were returned to the recorder and finally after the last card had been returned it was clear that Ashley had maintained his challenge and was rewarded with the title of 2017 Norfolk Handicap Champion and the Geoffrey Burroughs Salver.

The Handicap Team Shield, awarded for the best returned score by teams of three players was eventually won by the Eaton team of Stephen Limbert, Stephen Webster and Tony Reid-Cowan with a combined total of nett 446. Each player receiving an engraved tankard as a memento of their victory and taking back to their clubhouse the Norfolk Handicap Team Shield for display to their members.
